Hand Knitted Dinosaur Pattern Review

Great dinosaur pattern for a beginning knitter and the finished product is adorable

I am reviewing this Dinosaur Jr pattern because I was recently asked on my youtube channel to add some reviews for some handmade items I have done since I am a knitter. (If you’re bored you can check out my knitting webpage here).

Since I had just started a new project I thought it would be as good a time as ever to do a pattern review and some quick knitting instructions for this Dinosaur stuffed animal I made.

My son is a dinosaur fanatic and can name more dinos than most adults. So, when it happened that I didn’t have a project to knit and I asked my family if they wanted anything he said, “can you knit me a dinosaur mommy”, since he’s adorable of course I said yes.

I had started a different pattern and didn’t like it at all so I went searching for another and that is when I found Katie Boyette’s Dinosaur Jr Pattern. Here is a link to Katie’s blog because she has a few really fun patterns on there (I can’t wait to make the fox scarf) and she has also written a few books and she certainly deserves recognition for her work. http://www.katieboyette.com/

The first dino I attempted I used some yarn from my yarn stash and I absolutely loved how easy the pattern was to work with so I knew as soon as I finished the one for my son I was going to make another. I went back to my yarn stash and found some leftover [amazon text=Bernat baby yarn&asin=B01G78R4A2] and decided to try it out, this was a great decision.

In the video part of this post you will see my leftover worsted weight dino and then you will see my baby yarn dino take shape in stages. I have also added some beginner knitting information in case anyone was interested.

If you are a beginning knitter this will actually be a good pattern for you. If you have knitted in the round before you will have no issues with this guy. You will need to work on double pointed needles which a lot of people find intimidating if you have seen anyone use them, don’t be scared. The most important things you need to remember about knitting in the round on double points is to only concentrate on the needle you are working on and don’t twist your yarn when you join it and you’ll be fine. If you’ve never knitted a hat in the round before you might want to start with that before working on this.

The only special stitches you are going to need to know to make this are kfb and ssk and I show how to do these stitches at the end of my video.

I can not recommend this pattern enough, it is easy to follow, it is adorable and it knits up very quickly. Go ahead and try it and have fun.

BTW my baby yarn dino in the video is currently for sale so let me know if you’re interested. 🙂

How did you knit this using the Bernat baby yarn? I’ve been trying to and it’s been impossible to work with becuase of how tight it gets. I’d really like to use this yarn if possible so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

It is definitely a difficult yarn to work with. It is hard to see your stitches because of the fuzziness. 🙂 I made sure I reduced my tension while knitting with it so it was a looser knit. Because it is fuzzy you don’t have to worry about seeing any gaps in the stitches. I hope that helps.

Hi There could you tell me which weight Cascade 220 is this knitted in please! Seems there is 4ply Dk and Aran! And I can’t see the tension in the wool matching the knitting pattern!
Bit if a rusty knitter here sorry

I did not use the yarn noted in the pattern and instead used this yarn: https://amzn.to/3keKeQD (affiliate link)

Since the gauge doesn’t really matter on this (the bigger the yarn the bigger the dino) you would really be OK with whatever size yarn you buy. The yarn I used was a little hard to see while knitting but when it was done is was so soft and looked like a standard store bought stuffed animal, you would have no idea it was knitted! It’s been a while since I made this but if you have any questions let me know.
